HARDCODED SUBTITLE GUIDE

How to remove hardcoded subtitles from video

Hardcoded subtitles cannot be toggled off because they are part of the image. Before using AI cleanup, check for a subtitle track or editable source project that can solve the problem without repainting frames.

01

How to identify hardcoded subtitles

Play the video and switch off every subtitle or CC option. If text remains in exactly the same picture, it is likely burned into the frames. A separate SRT or subtitle stream can be disabled or removed without modifying the visual image.

Soft subtitles disappear when their track is disabled.

Hardcoded subtitles remain visible in screenshots and every player.

02

Use the cleanest source you can find

If you own the editing project, hide or delete the subtitle layer and export again. If you have a clean version of the same video, use it. Rebuilding the covered background is a fallback for text that exists only in the rendered frames.

Cropping can cut off text but also changes the framing and aspect ratio.

Blur and solid cover boxes hide words but leave a visible patch.

03

Understand the limits of frame reconstruction

Inpainting estimates the picture behind text from nearby pixels and frames. It tends to have an easier time with small subtitles over steady walls or soft backgrounds than with large words over moving people, water, foliage, or camera pans. Review the entire repaired region before using the clip.

Select only the video interval that needs cleanup.

Only process footage you own or have permission to modify; keep ownership watermarks and credits.

04

Choose the least destructive cleanup method

If you can retrieve the original project or a clean source video, that is usually the best starting point. A separate subtitle file can be removed without touching picture pixels. When only a hardcoded copy remains, options include cropping, covering, blurring, or video inpainting; each trades off framing, visible detail, and reconstruction quality.

Cropping removes part of the picture along with the subtitles.

A cover or blur hides the region but does not restore the background beneath it.

05

Expect different results across different scenes

Text over a flat wall or sky leaves a simpler region to rebuild than text crossing hair, water, foliage, or a moving face. A moving camera can reveal new background texture from frame to frame. Compression, subtitle outlines, shadows, and large text all make cleanup more demanding.

Test a section that contains both the most motion and the most detailed background.

Review neighboring frames for flicker, trails, or repeated texture.

06

Set up a focused selection before cleanup

Select only the captions and a modest margin around their outline. Include the shadow or stroke if it is baked into the image, but avoid covering a face or object whenever possible. Record the start and end of the affected segment so the review stays focused.

Keep a copy of the original file before any conversion or export.

Use Prompt or Mask mode to process a selected clip up to 4.8 seconds with Bria Video Eraser; only send footage you own or have permission to modify.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions before you start?

Can VLC remove hardcoded subtitles?

A player can turn off a separate subtitle track. It cannot switch off words that were rendered into the video frames. Check the player controls first; a persistent subtitle needs an edited source or a video inpainting workflow.

Can I remove hardcoded subtitles without cropping?

Video inpainting can reconstruct pixels where the text was while preserving frame boundaries. RemoveTextVideo offers Prompt and Mask processing through Bria Video Eraser for clips up to 4.8 seconds. Results depend on the covered background and motion.

Does removing a subtitle track change video quality?

Disabling or removing a separate subtitle track does not repaint the video image. Re-encoding may still affect quality depending on export settings, so keep the original file and use an appropriate codec and bitrate.

How can I tell if subtitles are hardcoded?

Turn off captions in the video player. If the words remain in the same picture, they are likely burned into the image. If they disappear, they are probably a separate track.

What is the best way to remove hardcoded subtitles?

Start with a clean source or editable subtitle track if available. Otherwise, compare cropping, covering, blurring, and video inpainting based on how much of the frame you can afford to lose and how complex the background is.

Does RemoveTextVideo process hardcoded subtitles today?

Yes. RemoveTextVideo can process a selected segment up to 4.8 seconds with Bria Video Eraser. Choose Prompt mode to describe the text or Mask mode to mark its region, then download the MP4 result.
