Remove subtitles from video
First check whether your subtitles are a separate track or burned into the picture. This guide shows how to tell the difference and prepare a short cleanup selection for hardcoded subtitles.
Remove text from video ↓Choose an MP4 or MOV. Preview stays in your browser; only the selected clip is sent if you start a removal job.
Check whether subtitles are soft or burned in
Soft subtitles are a track in the video file or a separate subtitle file. Turn captions off in your player; if the words disappear, the picture itself is already clean. Burned-in subtitles are pixels in every affected frame and stay visible when caption tracks are disabled.
Soft track: disable it in the player or remove the subtitle stream in your editing workflow.
Burned-in text: use a video inpainting workflow to rebuild the area behind the letters.
Choose a cleanup workflow for the subtitle pattern
For fixed subtitles, use Mask mode to mark the area or Prompt mode to describe the text. Moving subtitles may require frame-by-frame tracking, which this tool does not provide.
Draw the smallest box that covers the whole subtitle line, including its outline or shadow.
Preview a representative frame and confirm that the selection does not cover a face or important object.
Process a short section before a full video
Video cleanup reconstructs the picture across frames, so start with a short sample and inspect the result. RemoveTextVideo uses Bria Video Eraser to process selected clips up to 4.8 seconds; the local preview accepts MP4 and MOV files up to 500 MB and 10 minutes.
Start with the part that has the busiest motion behind the subtitles.
Only edit footage you own or have permission to modify; ownership watermarks and credits should remain intact.
Check for an editable subtitle track first
Before removing pixels, check the source project or player for a subtitle stream. A separate track can usually be switched off, replaced, or edited without changing the underlying video image. If the words remain when captions are disabled, they are part of the picture and need a video cleanup method.
Try the clean source file or turn off the subtitle stream before editing the image.
Keep the original video and subtitle file so you can restore or translate the captions later.
Review the difficult frames before editing more footage
A short sample is useful when subtitles overlap moving people, textured backgrounds, or camera motion. Inspect the start, middle, and end of a caption, then check a frame where the background changes. Reconstructing covered pixels is harder when the text crosses fine detail or occupies a large area.
Keep a clean copy and compare a short test in the editor you use for export.
Check the result at the original frame size; a small preview can hide smearing and flicker.
Prepare the video for a cleanup workflow
Keep the source resolution and frame rate and note the time range that needs work. RemoveTextVideo previews MP4 and MOV files locally and processes selected clips up to 4.8 seconds with Bria Video Eraser; only the prepared clip is sent to fal.ai when you submit.
Use a separate subtitle track when available; it avoids rebuilding image pixels.
Only edit footage you own or are authorized to change; retain attribution and ownership marks.
Questions before you start?
Can AI remove subtitles from a video?
Yes. RemoveTextVideo uses Bria Video Eraser in Prompt or Mask mode to remove subtitles from a selected clip up to 4.8 seconds. Results vary with motion, compression, and how much of the frame the text covers.
Can I remove subtitles that can be turned off?
Usually no AI is needed. If your player has a subtitle or CC control and the words disappear when you turn it off, disable that subtitle track or remove it in your video editor.
Can I process only part of a video?
Yes. Select a start and end point in the local preview. Each removal job processes a clip up to 4.8 seconds and returns an MP4.
Can I turn off a separate subtitle track instead of removing it?
Yes. If the words disappear when you disable captions in your player, they are likely a separate track. Turn that track off, replace it, or remove it in your editor; image cleanup is for text that remains in the picture.
Can I remove subtitles from only part of a video?
Yes. Set the start and end points in the preview and submit a segment up to 4.8 seconds for processing.
Which video formats does RemoveTextVideo preview?
The local preview accepts MP4 and MOV files up to 500 MB and 10 minutes. A removal job processes a selected segment shorter than 5 seconds and returns an MP4.
